Airport 5
Tower in the Fountain of Sparks
#13 in the Fading Captain Series
The last full album Bob Pollard and Tobin Sprout did
together was 1997's amazing Tonics and Twisted
Chasers. That was a special moment captured in time,
and one of, if not my favorite GbV-related records
ever. This was after the "classic" GbV line-up had
split, and Pollard was on to working with Cobra Verde.
Airport 5 is the first time Pollard and Sprout have
collaborated since the fore mentioned record, and
while it may not be the milestone that was Tonics.,
this is a fine piece of art to add to the collective
body of Pollard work. After releasing two singles that
quickly sold out (before I had a chance to get 'em,
dammit!), Pollard and Sprout have produced Tower in
the Fountain of Sparks, a solid record of pretty much
what you'd expect from the two. As with many Pollard
projects, the first couple of songs are the ones that
really jump out at me, and here we have no exception.
Burns Carpenter, Man of Science and Total Exposure,
both songs which have been getting the live GbV
treatment as of late, get the record going, and right
away you feel at home, as if the two guru's had never
stopped working together. And I guess they really
haven't, as two of the last three official GbV
releases have had Sprout pop- up, but a whole album
was definitely what we were all waiting for. I
certainly hope that this is not the last time we see
the two working together.
