Robert Pollard with Doug Gillard
Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department
#4 in the Fading Captain Series
This record has been out for a
while, but I figured it deserved to be reviewed. As much as I love the newest
Pollard solo record, I must say that this is the best of the Fading Captain
releases. Perhaps it’s the excellent musicianship of GbV/Gem guitarist Doug
Gillard, who handles all of the instruments while Pollard takes on all vocal
duties. This is one of the best batches of songs the Guru has ever set to
plastic. Pop Zeus, Soft Smoke and Tight Globes are my
favorites here, but the whole album is filled with great tunes. The guitar work
is phenomenal, and the leads aren’t your typical, guitar hero wankering.
There’s some great shit in here. The die-hards have, of course, already eaten
this up, but unfortunately this great record will go unnoticed by the
mainstream, which’s happy to just keep swallowing the same old shit. But, I
could bitch for hours about that shit. Just go to the GbV page, order this
record, and you will live a better life. (GawdamAdam)
