Having made some of the best rock records of the nineties together in Guided by Voices, Tobin Sprout and Bob Pollard (GBV's leader and effusive songwriter) couldn't stay apart for too long. Even though Tobe's been living in northern Michigan while Bob’s been shepherding the latest GBV lineup around the world on tour, these old friends (rock doesn't stop at age 40!) found time to knock out a gem last year with Tower in the Fountain of Sparks, which featured Sprout's rough-hewn instrumental tracks bolstered by Pollard's unending supply of catchy classic rock melodies. Twice is nice is the case with Life Starts Here, the duo's most recent collaboration, which, while certainly more of the same, is hardly filler. The off-the-cuff quality of these tracks is precisely what's been missing from the increasingly polished GBV releases. A breath of fresh air. For more info, check out.
