Mag Earwhig! Review By Greg Kot Chicago Tribune 5/23/97 ***

GBV's guiding force Robert Pollard has completely retooled his longtime Dayton, Ohio, band, with mixed results.
Gone is the insular punk-psychedelic sound that made "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars" one of the best albums of '96.
In its place is the more strident arena-friendly roar of another respected Ohio combo, Cobra Verde.
It's not a perfect match, especially on Pollard's shorter, more fragmented songs and dippier daydreams ("I Am a Tree"). But the grandeur of the stunning, hallucinatory "Portable Men's Society" by itself nearly justifies Pollard's new direction.
