Earthquake Glue
Matador Records

I have to admit my fondness for GBV is spotty at best; I love lots of their songs, I sometimes enjoy the debauchery and decadence of singer Robert Pollard and heck, I love many of their goblin rock song titles. However, if pushed, I would deny being a fan of the band. Why? Maybe it’s the slavish fandom (cue the "Coax Me" sing along) or perhaps the way just so many people touted them as the greatest pop band since The Beatles. Whatever, Earthquake Glue is a terrific rock ‘n’ roll record. Not as lo-fi as past efforts, nor as polished as Isolation Drills, songs like "My Son, My Secretary And My Country" and "The Best Of Jill Hives" are just as strong as "Postal Blowfish," "Chasing Heather Crazy" or anything else in their oevre. Earthquake Glue just might be the one to make me a believer.
